Mayoral Fellows

The Mayoral Fellows program helps build the City’s capacity for critical initiatives and programs. Fellows are high level executives, students and individuals from the private, nonprofit and public sectors.

Through partnerships with organizations like Encore.org, FUSE Corp and local universities, Mayor Fellows have:

  • Established San José Public Library Works, a career and business resource that includes in-person and online training, laptops and tablets for check-out, job placement activities, and access to business and productively software (FUSE Fellow).
  • Supported community engagement activities related to digital inclusion, especially on the East Side Communities which has historically been underserved. Fellows assessed potential vendors for broadband/wireless deployment and various corporate partners (Encore Fellow).
  • Assisted the San José Public Library Instruction and Programming Services team with setting up analytics tools to assess and evaluate the success of library programs, determining which metrics appropriately capture the nuances of library operations and program delivery to facilitate continuous improvement in the delivery of such programs (Encore Fellow).
  • Assessed staff and volunteer workforce needs and opportunities for intergenerational contribution in youth serving organizations (Encore Fellow).
  • Developed a Citywide Volunteer policy and helped streamline the process for recruiting and promoting volunteer opportunities as well as working with volunteers (Encore Fellow).
  • Design a one-stop civic and corporate engagement platform for the City of San José. The platform will be a means for community residents and professionals to engage in City sponsored service efforts (Stanford University Impact Labs).
  • Conduct an analysis of Public Library Branch Programs. This Fellow develop a framework for deciding whether a program should continue by looking at cost per attendee and attendance, attendance band staffing needs and trends (Santa Clara University Data Analytics).
  • Developing the San Jose Clean Energy plan that will benefit all members of the community by creating local jobs and promoting economic growth, with the ultimate objective to meet the city’s climate-action goals within five to 10 years (FUSE Fellow)
  • Analyzing data from the pilot programs, exploring different technology options, and researching varying business models to help develop a strategy for sustainable and cost-effective wireless solutions to provide low-cost and free Wi-Fi to the citizens (FUSE Fellow)
