Service Year

Service Year

Service Year is a national initiative that promotes Americans from all sectors to come together through a shared opportunity, cultural expectation, and a new civic rite of passage. Service years can be a powerful pathway for youth to gain skills, improve their community, and advance their careers.

Working closely with our Americorps partners, Mayor Sam Liccardo launched Service Year with a bold vision to make San José into a beacon for community service. Young adults will have opportunities to create a positive impact in our community through a service year that matches their skills and passion with a paid opportunity to develop real-world skills through hands-on service – all while building their resumes.

The City of San Jose aims to expand the capacity of current service-year programs; create service year opportunities where currently none exist; and seed new engagement programs for existing organizations and prospective entities (NPOs, city services, corporate programs, etc.) Recruiting, placing and supporting the deployment of 1,000 service year corps members throughout the City of San Jose, with a primary focus on education programs serving at-risk populations/communities is a primary goal.

We hope to impact 50,000 youth (1:50) throughout San Jose – changing the trajectory of service corps members and youth throughout the community touched by the service year program experience!
